I have a "friend" who shows up once a month. She turns my world upside down, over and over again.
I am a good person, caring and sweet, but when she comes to visit, I could rip off your head.
She takes no prisoners, foul words she does spout, I try to keep the words in, she lets them come out.
People don't understand me, or what this is about, to have this creature inside my head.
I despise who I am, half of the time, I feel sorry for my daughter, family and friends.
There's no way to describe it, for those who don't know, it's a living nightmare, she really needs to go.

Pre Menstrual Euphoric Disorder - Have You Experienced It?

A reader asks:  Something I've never understood is my own menstrual symptoms, which I've never seen discussed anywhere.  I get the complete opposite of you.  Instead of PMDD, I get Premenstrual Euphoric D.  For three or four days before bleeding starts, I get s surge of energy, both creative and physical, and my sex drive goes through the roof.  Later, when my period starts, I get quite severe backache and cramps.  This, I assume, is another type of PMS.

I have other atypical reactions, too.  If I get too aroused while standing, I fall over.  I can't be the only woman who experiences this, but I've never heard it described.  Seems to me that we need a lot more research in this area. PMS isn't just cultural.  It's physical, but I suspect it's far broader and more complex than people realize.

If you come across an explanation for my PMED, I'd be very grateful to find out.

Readers:  Can we help a sister out?  Please share any similar experiences (or any links to relevant material) you may have in the comments section, or write to me privately here.  Thank you!

  1. Hi, prior to my hysterectomy for pmdd, which was my cure, I was diagnosed bipolar because I was hypomanic every month around ovulation. It was crazy and most women I know dont have that extreme, of course it made the crash as my progesterone peaked to be pure and utter hell. My energy was through the roof but I was also self destructive without really seeing it. Since surgery, no hypomania and no crash. I was terrified I would never find the answer but as psych meds made me oh so worse, I pushed forward in the hormonal department. Just because your pattern doesn't follow the "norm" doesn't make it any less serious.

  2. I don't have what I would characterize as PMDD but I do get intense euphoria, energy, sense of well-being immediately prior to getting my period. The older I've gotten the longer it will last. But like you were saying, my cramps and aches have also become increasingly intense and I'm much more aware of the blood loss, than I had been.

  3. I have PMDD and I definitely experience PMED, it’s not every month my emotions are will range from month to month. However, I will want to have sex and my partner can not keep up and then I get upset because she thinks he doesn’t want me, I’m fat, I’m ugly, he don’t care about me(which is never the case).

**My boyfriend would get so confused and even mad at becauseI would flip out and yell and scream then cry uncontrollably and talk sh!t about myself while not allowing him to touch me.
I then came across the article “PMDD Advice for men”
It really flipped a switch with him. We have become better and stronger for it!
    Thank you for that.

  4. OMG yes!!!
Only for a couple of days at max though right before period, the prior 12 days are lethargy, sad, brain fog, angry, iritible! In a way these 2 days are the only time I actually feel good! All month... I wish I could bottle it 😂
